Undergraduate and graduate degree courses start in Pollenzo on Thursday September 14 with 136 students from 27 countries. Two Masters of Gastronomy to start at the end of October with 54 students from 21 countries.

The freshmen arriving at the University of Gastronomic Sciences represent an increasingly international student body. The three-year undergraduate degree and two-year graduate degree programs starting this year will be attended by students from 27 different countries: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and Venezuela.
For the first time, the three-year undergraduate program in Gastronomic Sciences will welcome 100 freshmen, 38 of whom come from outside Italy, while the two-year graduate program in Food Innovation and Entrepeurnership will welcome 37 students from across Italy.
With the Slow Food-organized Cheese about to start in Bra, the new students will be immediately immersed in the excitement of what has become the world’s biggest international event dedicated to quality cheese.
On the morning of Thursday September 14 the freshmen will be greeted by the out-going dean, Professor Piercarlo Grimaldi, and the new dean, Professor Andrea Pieroni, who will welcome them and introduce them to the Pollenzo community. This will be followed by a class on cheese with Piero Sardo, the president of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity and editor of Slow Food’s guide to Italian cheeses, and in the afternoon by a class with Roberto Burdese, the honorary president of Slow Food Italy and the managing director of Slow Food Promozione, on the history of Cheese and the program of the 2017 edition.
The students will have a chance to participate in the event, which runs from September 15 to 18, then from Tuesday September 19 to Friday September 22 they will be back in the classrooms in Pollenzo for introductions to the various courses by the faculty and presentations of UNISG services and the university’s academic projects.
A new group of international students will be arriving at the end of October, when two Masters of Gastronomy (in Food Ecologies and Sovereignty and in Food Cultures and Mobility) will be starting. The two programs have a total of 54 students from 21 countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
“In the past few years, the whole world has come to Pollenzo, and I’m not just speaking metaphorically” said Dean Piercarlo Grimaldi. “As my term comes to an end and I hand over to Professor Andrea Pieroni, the international student body has truly become a distinctive feature of this university.”
