Eighty-five new students will begin the Three-Year Undergraduate Degree in Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo on Monday September 22.
The high number is the final result of selection procedures carried out in May and September in Italy, sifting through the numerous applications received from all over the world.
Thirty-one students come from abroad, from Albania, Brazil, Cuba, France, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Syria, Spain, the United States, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
On Monday freshers’ week will begin with meetings with the staff and a tour of the university facilities. At 11am students will be welcomed by Carlo Petrini and the Dean, Professor Piercarlo Grimaldi, and in the afternoon they will begin their full immersion in the world of gastronomy with a lecture by Professor Massimo Montanari on the subject of “Food as Culture.”
The whole day of Tuesday September 23 will be dedicated to a presentation of the university syllabus by the various lecturers.
On Wednesday September 24, the students will attend presentations of the “UNISG Ecological Gardens” project, the Slow Food association and Slow Food International and, finally, the university’s study trip program.
Thursday September 25 will feature a meeting with representatives of “Al Elka,” an information center for foreign citizens in Bra, to learn about the laws governing study periods in Italy. Later on in the day, Professor Nicola Perullo will present the Pollenzo Manifesto, after which students will find out more about the university’s various student associations and societies: the Student Association, the UNISG Alumni network, the Slow Food UNISG Convivium, the Slow Food Italy Youth Network and the Gastronomic Society.
Friday September 26 will begin with a presentation of the Granaries of Memory project and other UNISG research projects, which will be followed by a series of talks by former students.
The week will end on Saturday September 27 with a tour of the city of Bra and its market organized by the Student Association. At the end of the day, freshers will join other students in the preparation of a collective Eat-In.
