BIOGRAPHY

Elena Mancioppi is postdoctoral researcher at the University of Gastronomic Sciences, with the project “Food and Smell: The Perception and Sociopolitical Role of Food Flavors in Contemporary Society”.

In 2022 she received her PhD (excellent cum laude) in Ecogastronomy, Education and Society, with a thesis titled “The Olfactive. Towards a Socio-Aesthetics of Smell”, which investigates philosophical, social, and cultural values and issues of olfactory perception, stressing the contemporary implications connected to food and environmental aromatization.

Her studies deal with aesthetics and philosophy of perception, with particular attention to the sense of smell. Her research interests include the sociopolitical outcomes of food flavors, communication and scent marketing, the use of odors in the arts and in avant-garde cuisines, ecological theories of perception, the aesthetics of atmospheres, olfactory technologies, ethics and epistemology of smell.

She is the author of a monograph on the aesthetics of olfaction; she has published several articles in academic journals and chapters in edited volumes, and co-edited an issue of Rivista di Estetica dedicated to the world of smell.
