Attending the FAO's World Food Forum 2024 was an inspiring experience. This annual gathering of thought leaders, innovators, and youth changemakers showcases ideas to shape the future of food systems for the United Nations. The topics addressed, from science and innovation to food justice and indigenous rights, highlighted the challenges we face, as well as the pivotal role that the youth can play in driving change. Here, I\u2019ll share insights from the forum and reflections from fellow students on how gastronomes may impact food systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Experience at the Forum<\/b><\/p>\n

One of the most compelling aspects of the forum was the diversity of ideas converging toward common goals. Panels on agroecology and food innovation highlighted the urgent need to address climate change and create opportunities, particularly for women in the global South. A session on food sovereignty, for instance, resonated with the values upheld by Slow Food, highlighting the importance of producing and distributing good, clean and fair food for all.<\/span><\/p>\n

These experiences not only reinforced my commitment to sustainable food systems but also expanded my understanding of the complexity of these issues. Meeting young leaders from around the world illuminated the different ways we can approach food system challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gastronomes and their Perspectives on Food Systems<\/b><\/p>\n

To further explore the gastronome\u2019s role, I spoke with two UNISG alumni, Amber Ansari and Anjali Sebastian. Amber highlighted the importance of reducing food waste, sharing, \u201cGastronomes can promote a whole-ingredient approach, minimising waste by using every part of a food product. By sharing these practices, we empower people and the industry to make sustainable choices.\u201d Her view shows how gastronomes can educate for a more efficient food system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anjali noted the unique, holistic perspective gastronomes bring. \u201cFor a gastronome, a plate is about its journey from seed to plate,\u201d she said. \u201cWe examine the entire agrifood system, recognising interconnectedness and finding solutions that consider every part of the food journey.\u201d This insight reflects how gastronomes can identify challenges and inspire solutions for sustainable systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing Innovation and Action to Food Systems<\/b><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the forum and our discussions, I\u2019m convinced gastronomes can drive change in food systems by:<\/span><\/p>\n
