Study-abroad

Study-abroad semester

A study-abroad semester during the second year of the two-year graduate program provides students with a rich and varied perspective on food studies.

The University of New Hampshire (UNH), founded in 1866 in Durham, New Hampshire (USA), became UNISG’s first study-abroad partner in 2009. The largest university in the state and a leading land-grant school, UNH comprises 15,000 students and numerous regional and national projects that actively involve the local community.

In 2008, UNH launched a dual major in EcoGastronomy that focuses both on gastronomic knowledge and appreciation as well as the issues of environment, economics, politics, and ethics. The program brings together a number of university departments including the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, the Whittemore School of Business and Economics, and the University Office of Sustainability, and addresses not only agriculture, food, and sustainable nutrition, but also international academic exchange among students.

During the study-abroad period at UNH, UNISG students take courses in Advertising as Social Communications, the Science of Food and Eating, and Ecotourism: Managing for the Environment, while simultaneously discovering the traditions, lifestyles, and products of the New England area. Similarly, UNH students come to the UNISG Pollenzo campus for a semester, studying the History of Cuisine, the History of Food, Food Law, Aesthetics, Food Technology Processes, and an intensive course in Italian language. They also participate in guided tastings and field seminars in Piedmont as well as other Italian regions.

Additional collaborations are planned with other foreign schools in order to develop further exchange and study-abroad programs.
